A Reunion Through the Lens – A Joyful Family Photoshoot at Kwun Tong Waterfront
Last Friday morning, filled with anticipation and warmth, I took my camera and headed to Kwun Tong Waterfront Park – this time to photograph a long-time client, Mr. Wong, and his family of four. Though called a “long-time client,” they were more like old friends I hadn’t seen in ages.
I remembered eleven years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Wong came to me for their wedding photos. They had just gotten engaged, their eyes brimming with hope for the future. Now, when we reconnected, they were parents of two. On the phone, Mr. Wong laughed and said, “This time we wanted to take family photos, to record what we look like now.”
The Joy of the Reunion
The appointed time was 11:00 AM, the sun shining brightly. When I arrived at Kwun Tong Waterfront Park, I could see Mr. Wong and his family already on the grass. Their eldest son, Lester, eight years old, was chasing after his younger brother, while their youngest son had just graduated from kindergarten.
“Long time no see!” Mr. Wong walked over and warmly patted my shoulder. Mrs. Wong was holding her son, her smile as warm as ever. This feeling of being trusted and remembered by a long-time client has always been one of my most precious rewards as a photographer.
A Pleasant Photo Shoot
The morning light at Kwun Tong Promenade was just right. We strolled along the promenade, taking photos as we went, the view across Victoria Harbour serving as a natural backdrop.
What touched me most was that the entire shoot didn’t feel like “work.” My youngest son loves the camera; every time I raised it, he’d strike a cute pose and run over, saying, “Uncle, look!” My younger brother, though small, laughed happily in his father’s arms, making everyone laugh.
Mr. Chan said, “Eleven years ago you took our wedding photos, now you’re taking our family photos, next time it might be documenting our children’s growth!” We all laughed. Watching a family grow and become whole—that’s probably the greatest meaning of this job.
A Heartwarming End
As the shoot neared its end, the family sat on a bench by the sea, the children nestled beside their parents—at that moment, without any prompting, I gently pressed the shutter, capturing this most authentic and heartwarming scene.
Yes, for me, every photo shoot is more than just pressing a shutter. It is my greatest honor to witness a family’s growth and record their happy moments through my lens.
On the way home, I couldn’t wait to see the photos I took today. No, to be precise, I couldn’t wait to organize these joyful memories and hand them over to my most trusted “old friend.”
Postscript: Every time I photograph a returning client, it’s a pleasant reunion. Thank you to Mr. Huang and his family for their trust, which gave me the opportunity to step back into their lives and capture the most genuine happiness of this period.
